Physical Education Expectations

Mr. Hewuse’s Physical Education Expectations

Welcome to an exciting year of physical education. The following rules and expectations are to ensure a safe and successful learning environment for all students. They allow each student to earn their grade based on participation/effort, using proper technique, following classroom rules/expectations, making safe choices, and demonstrating positive attitudes and behaviors.

Our ultimate goal in Physical Education is to become life-long participants in fitness, sport/recreation activities and healthy lifestyle choices. We also want to improve our overall physical fitness, work ethic, skill development, sportsmanship and knowledge base throughout the year. Along the way we will be good citizens and have fun!

We will:
  1. Teach students to take responsibility for their health and fitness (self-respect and self-motivation).
  2. Increase overall muscular strength and endurance.
  3. Enhance cardiovascular efficiency.
  4. Improve mobility (flexibility plus strength).
Proper Attire: All students are required to wear acceptable Physical Education attire. In the event you choose not to dress for class you will lose daily points.

This includes:
  1. Tennis shoes with laces tied and a change of socks. NO sandals, boots, etc.
  2. T-shirt(s) only to be worn in Physical Education class – no tank tops.
  3. A pair of athletic shorts/pants only to be worn in class.
  4. Sweatshirts and other warm clothing should be worn as the weather gets colder.
  5. Deodorant – no spray deodorants, please.

Locks & Lockers:  Students will be issued a locker and combination. All students are responsible for their own valuables – the locker room is not locked during the class period. Do not share your locker or combination with anyone.

Excuses: A note of injury or illness from a parent/guardian will be acceptable for a maximum of one week. Any excuse for more than one week must be from a physician. Physician notes should detail what the student is able to participate in, not what they are unable to participate in. Students will be required to make up each missed class by completing an alternate assignment or loss of credit may occur. Modifications of requirements may occur in extenuating circumstances.

Make-Ups: Any student who is absent from their Physical Education will have to make up all missed class periods (school excused activities are the exception). Students are required to complete a make-up (30 minutes of physical activity outside the school setting) and form that will be graded upon completion. All make-ups must be completed by the end of the quarter. Make-up forms are available on Mr. Hewuse’s board.

Class Organization: Students will be given three minutes at the beginning of the period and three minutes at the end of the period to change clothes. This is enough time if it is used correctly. Students will be expected to be in their squads ready for warm-ups three minutes after the period starts – otherwise they are marked tardy.
Grading:  Grading will consist of two different components - observable behavior/participation and written work/evaluations.
Observable behavior and participation80% of grade (20 daily points are earned).

  • Effort - 10 points. This includes participating in all activities, taking responsibility for own physical fitness/health, improving measurements/testing and putting forth maximum ability (be the best that you can be).
  • Skills & strategies – 3 points. This includes developing skill/strategies with proper instructed technique.
  • Following procedures and expectations - 3 points. This includes changing into proper gym attire (2 points) and being in your squad three minutes after class begins (1 point).
  • Safety – 2 points. This includes making safe decisions regarding one’s actions, other students and equipment.
  • Attitude and Behavior – 2 points. This includes behavior/respect towards teacher, fellow students and equipment.
Disruptive attitudes, inadequate daily participation, improper dress, being tardy, using
abusive language, poor sportsmanship, disregard for safety, and not following class
expectations will lower points. No jewelry is allowed including earrings that hang
below the lobe, and any other piece deemed dangerous by the teacher.

Written evaluations20% of grade. This includes written tests, quizzes & assignments.

Please read through all of the areas of this contract and sign. Have a parent/guardian
